It's All About the Nervous System

When we are dealing with symptoms such as anxiety, reactivity, overwhelm, or the deep heaviness of depression or grief, we're working directly with the nervous system.

This intricate network orchestrates every function in your body, from the way you move and breathe to how you think and feel. It processes the information from your senses, helps you adapt to changes, and keeps your body in harmony by regulating essential functions like your heart rate and temperature. It also handles more complex tasks like memory, learning, and emotions, ensuring that you can think clearly, remember, and experience the full spectrum of your feelings. In essence, the nervous system is the command center of your body, keeping everything in balance.

Experience

Yet, the way we've evolved as a species has disrupted this natural harmony. Modern life, with its relentless stressors and demands, can overwhelm the nervous system, leading to anxiety, reactivity, and burnout. We live in a world that often teaches us to suppress our emotions and “toughen up,” which only exacerbates the strain on our nervous system. When emotions are suppressed rather than expressed, they become bottled up within us, resulting in chronic stress, depression, and emotional numbness. The symptoms of anxiety, grief, or depression are signals that our nervous system is out of balance. While our well-being relies on expressing and managing our emotions, years of suppression turn this into a deeply ingrained habit. This tension is stored in our bodies, our breath becomes restricted, and the cycle becomes even harder to break.
